The Lost M&M

This is what happened after I gave Graham a M&M after going "potty" in the toilet.

Graham: "Where's M&M?"
Me: "You ate it!"
Graham: "Where's M&M?"
Me: "It's in your tummy!"

Graham then begins grabbing his tummy saying, "Open! Open!" as he tries to recover the M&M so that he can enjoy it one more time. Guess that boy just doesn't get the digestive system, huh?

Fixin' the Facts

Well, my Granddaddy worked on airplanes, but not during World War II, and my cousin sang "Precious Lord" and not "Precious Jesus." I just got through updating this information on the previous post so that it will be correct. It's hard to keep up with 90 years worth of events! :)

Home

March of 1920. That's when my Granddaddy entered the world. He had no idea what God had in store for him. He got older and worked hard. It was the Depression, and he had to quit school just to help provide for his family. He met a girl and fell in love. He served as a quarter master in World War II. He had four children. He wanted all of his children to go to college...something he was unable to do. And all four of them did. And then he watched his children get married and have babies of their own. 10 grandchildren. He got to see all 10 of them go to college as well. And then he got to see his grandchildren having babies. 14 great grandchildren. And who knows how many more to come.

When I think about Granddaddy, I think about a lot of things. I think about the camping trips he took me on from the time I was a toddler. I think about him pulling me behind the riding lawn mower in the wagon. I think about air popped pop corn, the candy box, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, nutty buddies, afternoon naps in the sun room, Bing Crosby, and staying up late to watch the Johnny Carson show. I think about New Years Eve when my parents dropped us off and we celebrated with Granddaddy and Grandmother by banging on pots and pans in the living room. I think about him giving me money to put in the offering when I went to church with him. I think about all the Christmases, all the birthdays, all the meals, all the school programs he attended. When I think about my childhood, I think about my Granddaddy.

He wasn't famous. He wasn't perfect. But he was a great man. A man who loved Jesus. I can't help but wonder in "It's A Wonderful Life" fashion how different my life would have been without Granddaddy. If he hadn't taught my Daddy about Jesus, then I wonder if my Dad would have taught me about Jesus, and I wonder if I would then be teaching my two children about Jesus?

On the day he died, I told him I loved him. He tried to talk back. But my dad assured him that we knew he loved us and he didn't need to have the words at that moment. See, that's the thing about people you really love. Of course you want to tell them you love them, but words aren't always necessary. He's loved me for 28 years. Told me many times that he's loved me in words and actions. I didn't need that affirmation on his death bed. I tried to memorize his face as he laid in the hospital bed, and I held his hand. Over the last 90 years, I wonder how many hands he shook, how many hugs he gave, how many flat tires he changed, and how many babies he held with those two hands. I kissed his cheek and told him I loved him again. And then I left near death at the hospital to go hold new life as I cradled my two month old daughter in my arms.

Just before eleven I got the call. My husband told me the news. My dad was praying and my cousin was singing "Precious Lord" during his final minutes. I cried and then sat on the couch just thinking about my Granddaddy. As it got closer to midnight, it started to snow. With all the lights off in the house, my daughter in my arms, and my husband by my side, we stared out the picture window as the snow blanketed the ground. I couldn't help but think, "Though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow." And I knew Granddaddy was in heaven not because he was a hard worker and had a beautiful, successful family but because his sins had been made as white as snow. I was thankful for the snow...thankful for the reminder that sweet Granddaddy had gone home to a place where "sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more."

Dear Lucy

Dear Lucy,
The night before I met you, I didn't sleep much. All the anticipation of what was to come the next day on top of the sleeplessness that already accompanies pregnancy didn't make for a good combination. Plus I had to be at the hospital early for a 7:30 c-section. I put on a dress and leggins, threw on a pair of Converses, and had your Daddy take one last pregnancy photo. It was chilly, but not too cold. Or maybe it was just all the adrenaline that kept me warm. It was dark outside when we got to the hospital. Nurses came to get me ready for surgery. They asked questions. I tried to answer them. Meanwhile I was dying to meet you. Nattie and Papa brought Graham to see me before they took me back to the OR. Your daddy and I prayed. Then it was time. I was shaking when we got to the operating room. Teeth Chattering. It was cold. But I was also so nervous. You were going to be born 4 weeks early, and I was well aware that you could potentially spend some time in the NICU. But I was also hopeful. It seemed to take forever. It did actually take a little longer than anticipated. But finally, finally I heard your cry. Your Daddy commented on how much hair you had. Then, I finally got my first glimpse of you as the doctor held you in his hands. I cried. After you got cleaned up, your Daddy brought you to me for a quick kiss. And that evening I held you for the first time. It was a sweet day. One I won't forget. The day I got to meet you, my daughter, who I already loved.

Love,
Your Momma

I Wuv Woosy

I wuv Woosy. Translation: I love Lucy. That's what I've been hearing around here these days. And even more common than that is, "Where's Woosy? Where's Woosy?" Graham is so concerned about his little sister. He is always looking for a "blankie" to cover her up and her paci to make her stop crying. It's quite adorable to see how smitten he is with the newest girl in the house.

Lucy arrived on 11/10/10 at 9:02 in the morning. After some difficulty getting the spinal to work in the OR(which scared me to death) and having to have a second nurse anesthetist come perform the procedure, we finally got to meet our baby girl. She weighed 6 lbs 13 oz and was 18 1/2 inches long. They were a little concerned about her breathing, so they monitored her closely until about 5:00 pm that evening when they finally decided that she would not need to go to the NICU! This of course meant that I finally got to hold her!

Life is not quite yet back to normal, but I'm sure we'll soon be settling into a routine. I haven't figured out how I will go grocery shopping with 2 kids under 2, but I guess I'll learn soon enough. I'm going to have to scope out Publix to see how all the other moms do it. I don't really think there is a place for two children in the carts!

We're so thankful Lucy arrived safely and so grateful to have another little kid to fill our home and our lives. We love Lucy. That's for sure.

(Sorry, I wrote this a few weeks ago and just forgot to post. I did go to the grocery store today IN THE RAIN with TWO KIDS. Thank goodness they give away free cookies. Otherwise I don't think we would have made it!)

It's Time!

Well in about 9 hours I will be a mother to a little girl. I am a little nervous but mostly excited. I spent Friday night in the hospital because I have officially developed preeclampsia. The doctor was concerned about this and wanted to monitor me overnight. Things looked better on Saturday so he gave me the option of having Lucy or waiting a couple of more weeks. Jeff and I decided to wait.

Today, however, I went for a visit and my blood pressure was high. My doctor came into the room and said, "Pretty please can I deliver your baby in the morning?" How can you resist that? He said there was just no reason to delay the delivery any more. On Saturday he didn't have much of opinion. Today, he felt very strongly about delivering our daughter. So we of course agreed. We're scrambling around the house packing bags, washing baby clothes in Dreft, and just trying to mentally prepare for a baby in the morning. I can't wait to meet her.

Glamour Shots

If you came to my blog thinking that you were going to see pictures of me from 3rd grade with gaudy make-up and a pink boa around my neck, I'm sorry to dissapoint you. Those aren't the glamour shots I'm referring to. And by the way, is Glamour Shots still in business?

We're talking about Lucy here. I went for Lucy's weekly photo shoot today (aka ultrasound). She's looking great. She weighs in at approximately 5 lbs 13 oz. And she has a lot of hair. Seriously, I never realized you could see hair on an ultrasound. The ultrasound tech pointed it out a few weeks ago.

"Oh look, you can see hair coming down the back of her neck."
"The back of her neck?"
"Well, she probably has some on the top of her head too, but I can't see it from this angle."
"So you mean she doesn't necessarily have a rat tail?"

Don't worry, I got to see the hair on the top of her head today. So rest assured that she is not a baby with a rat tail. On the ultrasound it looks like a ton of hair, but we'll just have to see what it's like in person. I wonder if it's going to be brown, blond, or red? I'm assuming her eyes will be blue. I guess most babies are born with blue eyes anyway, and plus Jeff and I both have blue eyes. Will she be a snuggler unlike her older brother? Will she be as silly as Graham? Jeff thinks it's ridiculous that I wonder about these things before she is born, but I think it's the most natural thing in the world. I mean, hello! I have a person growing inside me, and I want to know what she is like.

For now, I'll settle for weekly "glamour shots." Graham and Lucy just might have more pictures of themselves in utero than in their entire first year of life. I just wish these pictures were in color! How amazing would that be?
